Dr. Liang Shijie discusses the high incidence of edema in 2025: it is caused by dampness, and the elderly should be vigilant.
According to the ancient theory of the Five Elements and Six Seasons in traditional Chinese medicine, the combination of Jia and Ji generates the element of Earth, which symbolizes an abundance of moisture and can pose unexpected health challenges. The year 2025, when it is the Year of the Serpent, is particularly noteworthy in this regard. Dr. Liang Shijie has observed a marked increase in cases of edema, especially among older adults who are already overweight, with edema predominantly affecting the lower extremities. Occasionally, there have also been instances of swelling in the head and upper body, which are closely linked to the climatic characteristics of 2025.
In 2025, the combination of Jia and Ji seems to have catalyzed the rampant spread of dampness. During this year, with the deficiency of the middle operation and the weakened lung energy, the spleen is more susceptible to dampness. The presiding element of the year, Jueyin Fengmu, with exuberant liver energy, allows wind to disturb dampness and impurity, making the already humid environment even more unbearable. Meanwhile, the presiding element of the source, Xiaoyang Xianghuo, during the transition period between spring and summer, brings about a complex climate where "wind, dampness, and heat" coexist. Such an environment undoubtedly provides a fertile ground for the occurrence of edema.
Excessive dampness not only makes people feel stuffy and uncomfortable but can also be the culprit behind edema. Dr. Liang Shijie pointed out that excessive dampness can cause edema, which is mainly related to deficiency of yang energy in the spleen and kidneys, dampness obstructing the spleen, and stagnation of qi and blood. When the yang energy in the spleen and kidney is deficient, the functions of transforming and metabolizing water and dampness will decline, leading to stagnation of water and dampness within the body, thereby causing edema. Furthermore, the habit of living in a humid environment and consuming cold, greasy, fatty, and sweet foods can exacerbate the invasion of dampness.
How can we prevent and treat this serious health issue? Dr. Liang Shijie provides detailed recommendations. In terms of diet, it is advisable to avoid excessive intake of cold, greasy, and sugary foods, and instead consume more foods that tonify the spleen and resolve dampness, such as mung beans, goji root, chestnut seeds, and gourd. These foods not only help the body expel dampness but also enhance the spleen's transportation function.
Exercise is also a good way to eliminate dampness. Moderate exercise can boost metabolism and accelerate the elimination of dampness. Whether it's a walk, a jog, or yoga, these light exercises can help your body get rid of dampness in a relaxed and enjoyable manner.
Of course, TCM therapy is also an indispensable part of the treatment process. Methods such as Chinese medicine therapy, moxibustion, and cupping can effectively dispel dampness and cold, and unblock meridians. These methods are not only safe and reliable but also highly effective, which has won the favor of patients.
However, preventing and treating edema is not a quick process; Dr. Liang emphasized that in addition to the measures mentioned above, it is also important to pay attention to lifestyle adjustments, such as maintaining a clean and dry living environment and avoiding prolonged exposure to damp conditions, as well as following the doctor's advice regarding acupuncture, herbal medicine, and other treatments to regulate the body's condition.
Only in this way can the root cause of edema be addressed, and the body can be restored to good health.
It is worth mentioning that although edema is more common in the elderly, it is not an insurmountable problem. As long as we master the correct methods of prevention and treatment, we can effectively reduce the incidence of edema. Dr. Liang Shijie, with his professional knowledge and extensive experience, has revealed the truth behind edema and provided us with practical solutions.
In this special year of 2025, let's work together to overcome dampness and free ourselves from the troubles of edema! This is not only about taking responsibility for our own health, but also about striving for a better quality of life. Together, we can create a healthier and brighter future!
